Do hummingbirds always spin clockwise (and frantically) around flowers?

Because this new “Auto Awesome” animated gif that Google+ automatically created for me has me wondering.  (Well, wondering about the clockwise part. I already know that hummingbirds only operate in frantic mode. A laid-back hummingbird means the end really is nigh.)

Anyway, this sequence was a compilation of 5 separate photos sequenced together into an animation.

Because hummingbirds move so quickly, it looks normal to the human eye, instead of a really fast slideshow.

Once the giant pancake of snow-ice finally melts, and spring arrives, along with the hummies, I will report back.

  1. Very, very cool! And I do not know the answer (but will look more closely at the hummingbirds here in Vancouver!).
