Black lung disease is still a thing

In the latest issue of CHEST Advocates, a publication of the American College of Chest Physicians, I explore the ongoing problem of black lung disease in American coal miners.

Admittedly, I didn’t know this was still a thing in the US. It feels anachronistic, something we had of course eradicated long ago. After all, we know what causes it and how to stop it. But no — coal miners’ lives are still very much on the line as they work to extract the energy we all use in our homes and businesses.

I spoke with a coal miner who has become a patient advocate, and a field coordinator for Appalachian Voices, which works on environmental health issues.
